Vodaphone's Viral Commercial

As the 2011 calendar year draws to a close, digital media outlets around the globe are all posting their own, editorial "Best Of" lists. And although this video isn't a 2011 release (it was actually posted more than two years ago), we still think it's one of the best pieces of viral motorsport marketing ever unleashed, worthy of a spot on anyone's "Best Of" list.

The 2011 Formula 1 season has come to a close, which typically results in withdrawal-like symptoms for many F1 fanatics (ourselves included). During the off seaon, while the teams work furiously on their 2012 programs, it's entertaining to do a little research to learn some more about the history and heritage of the pinnacle of auto racing. There are hundreds of clips online that feature rare footage and glimpses into the past and this is one of them.

Porsche in Le Mans

The legendary German automaker has produced a quick short that provides a glimpse of their 60 years heritage of Le Mans racing. Raw and gritty. Beautiful.

"16 overall victories. Countless records. That's Porsche Motorsport in Le Mans. For more than 60 years: the fastest race cars. The toughest drivers. And now: the best scenes. More information at the Porsche YouTube channel"

Go Faster Film

A few weeks back, we recommended Go Faster: The Graphic Design of Racing Cars. Thankfully, Gestalten recently reposted their promo film with Go Faster author/editor Sven Voelker. It's a great watch and a great book.

Just in case you're still searching for that 2010 Haynes manual for your RB6, it's in stock over at Aerobooks/Autobooks in Burbank, CA. Of course, they carry more practical selections too. Speedhunters recently did a visit to the unique bookshop and have posted some great pics here.

Crashed Ferrari Table

Designer Charly Molinelli created an interesting coffee table (and conversation piece) with his recent Crashed Ferrari Table. In addition to being reminiscent of sculptor John Chamberlain, it's a great way to get a few more miles out of a pile of scrap metal.

Art and Motorsport: Grand Prix (1966)

Beautiful opening title sequences by legendary graphic designer, Saul Bass, for the 1966 film, Grand Prix. Directed by John Frankenheimer, this film centers around Formula 1 and the glamour of the Gran Prix of Monaco. The action sequences represent quite a technical achievement for it's day, as evidenced in the short vignette below.

And nothing compares to seeing F1 shot on 35mm film.

Red Bull Racing Mountain Climb

Another great promotional short presented by Red Bull Racing's Formula 1 Team, this time climbing the highest paved roads in the world. At it's highest point, the Khardung La road in India measures more than 18,000 feet above sea level. Providing sensational visuals, and preceding this weekend's Gran Prix of India, we can only imagine the overwhelming logistical difficulties of hauling an entire F1 support team up a mountain.
